Yesterday, April 24, marked a particularly special anniversary for me. On that date in 1980, an attempt was made to rescue the 52 Americans held hostage in Iran. Tragically, a combination of unfortunate circumstances (including mechanical failure with two helicopters, a hydraulic leak in another, and a sand storm in the Iranian desert), resulted in one helicopter colliding into a C-130 cargo plane. Eight American servicemen were killed.
It's very important for me to commemorate this tragic day, as my dad was one of the American hostages these men died trying to rescue.
The service members who lost their lives that day:
Major Richard L. Bakke, Major Harold L Lewis Jr., TSgt Joel C. Mayo, Major Lyn D. McIntosh, Captain Charles T. McMillan, Sgt John D. Harvey, Cpl George N. Holmes Jr., and SSgt Dewey L Johnson.
