Architects OMA + OLIN have created an AMAZING design for the first ever elevated public park in Washington DC and Exelon, the parent company to Pepco, has just donated $5 million to help make it happen.
The park will be located at the location of the old 11th Street Bridge (which is right next to the current 11th Street Local Bridge), which connected Capitol Hill/Navy Yard to the neighborhoods of Anacostia/Fairlawn.
So what is going to be included in this park?! According to bbarcdc.org, it will host "outdoor performance spaces; playgrounds; urban agriculture; an Environmental Education Center with classrooms to teach students about river systems; public art that tells the rich history of the region; and kayak and canoe launches." On another page, they also say "[a]dditional planned features include a hammock grove, rain gardens, picnic garden and overlooks with views of the Capitol and Anacostia hills."
Unfortunately, it's still going to be a while before the park is ready for the public. Construction is set to start in 2021 and is anticipated to be completed in 2023.
