UMD's Brenda Frese Named AP Women's Coach of the Year

For the second time in her career, University of Maryland's women's basketball head coach, Brenda Frese, has been named the AP Women's Coach of the Year! Out of the 30-person national panel that crowns the winner, she received 8 votes. Runners up Tara VanDerveer of Stanford & Wes Moore of North Carolina State had 7 each.

“It’s special. Obviously, it's going to be one I never forget,” said Frese as reported by WJLA. “What makes it so special is having this journey through a pandemic with the most selfless group of people you could go through a pandemic with. No one had Maryland doing anything this season after the graduation and losses of all five starters last year.”

Frese led the Terps to the Sweet 16 in this year's NCAA Tournament. UMD ultimately lost to Texas.

Frese first was acknowledged with this honor 19 years ago when she was at Minnesota.
