At this year's CMT Artists of the Year Awards, the attention shifted from the honorees to the message of country music, that the genre stands together.
Three of this years' honorees, Jason Aldean, Chris Stapleton and Keith Urban, teamed up with Little Big Town to honor the late Tom Petty with their country rendition of "I Won't Back Down." The message of the night continued to ring clearly through this song as the night also remembered those lives lost in the Las Vegas tragedy and the hurricanes that have swept through the nation.
Jason Aldean, who was performing during the shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Vegas, opened the night by saying "Heartbroken doesn't even begin to explain how some of us feel. We have proven time and again in this country that we have the power to overcome anything that threatens our way of life or our freedom."
