D.C. Motorized Scooters Could Get Speed Limit Increase

Normally you hear calls for speed decreases, not increases. But that is not the case in DC!

The District Council’s Committee on Transportation and Environment has proposed that the speed limit of motorized scooters in Washington D.C. increase 5 MPH, which would make the maximum speed 15 MPH as opposed to the current 10 MPH. According to their 2020 Committee Budget Report, their reasoning is that "The Committee has also heard complaints from dockless scooter users and operators that the ten mile per hour speed limit imposed by the current law makes users feel unsafe. It is their position that when they cannot keep up with the speed of bikes in bicycle lanes, they are putting themselves in danger.”
