Get up off the couch--or else! That's the basic takeaway from a new American Cancer Society study which shows that people who lead overly sedentary lifestyles are at increased risk for 14 different diseases, including: cancer; heart disease; stroke; diabetes; kidney disease; suicide; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD; lung disease; liver disease; peptic ulcer, and other digestive disease; Parkinson's disease; Alzheimer's disease; nervous disorders; and musculoskeletal disorders.
"The simple message is we should be moving more," said lead researcher Alpa Patel.
