A Rat Infestation Could Be Next After the Brood X Cicada Invasion

Just the news we were hoping for...

Health officials in Montgomery County, Maryland are warning residents that a rat infestation could on the horizon thanks to the recent emergence of the Brood X cicadas.

The cicadas are a plentiful food source for rats, but of course they won't last forever. Once the cicadas die off though, the rats will have to shift gears in their search for food and that unfortunately may bring them into our houses.

SO BEST TO START TAKING PREVENTATIVE MEASURES NOW!

It's recommended that you:

  • don't place food for stray animals
  • utilize a catch-tray under bird feeders
  • keep pet food indoors in tightly sealed containers
  • reducing clutter on their properties
  • clear out weeds in your garden, as they prefer to burrow in yard foliage

If you believe that your home is experiencing a rat infestation (and live in Montgomery County), contact the Montgomery County Health Department’s Licensure and Regulatory Services section.
