Police said the driver of a Kia Sorento that hit and killed a woman and her 5-year-old granddaughter as they were out for a morning walk Monday identified as Callie Schwarzman,  has been charged with DUI, among other offenses. Police listed those as

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol
  • Driving while impaired by alcohol
  • Driving while so far impaired by drugs/ drugs and alcohol that cannot drive safely
  • Driving while impaired by controlled dangerous substance
  • Negligent manslaughter by automobile (two counts)
  • Homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol (two counts)
  • Homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by drugs (two counts)
  • Homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by controlled dangerous substances (two counts)

Everyone is asking the question, HOW is a person with this list of violations able to get behind the wheel and drive?

May 2015: Hit & Run

May 2016: Traffic Citation

June 2017: DUI

Feb 2018: Driving on Suspended License

Feb 2018: Hit & Run

July 2018: Charged with hitting/killing woman & 5 y/o + DUI

This is such a tragic story all the way around. No idea what the backstory is with this drunk driver's family and home life but the facts remain she was AGAIN driving impaired, this time AT 7 am when she drove her car up onto the sidewalk where a woman and her grand daughter where enjoying a morning walk. Heartbreaking.

Our judicial system HAS to do better. Let me know what you think. MJ
