What started as a jackpot celebration ended as a frustrated empty-handed walk out of MGM National Harbor for Cynthia Obie, FOX 5 reported.
Obie had won thousands from a slot machine jackpot in the National Harbor casino last Friday, Jan. 4, but when it came time to claim her prize, the casino didn't pay up because they mistyped a digit of her social security card into the system.
Whoever's number they did input into the database had owed Maryland a large amount for child support and according to the original report, the money that Obie had won was seized.
While the mistake is seemingly on behalf of the casino, MGM provided FOX with a statement saying that they can not pay Obie out and that she will have to communicate with the Gaming Control Agency to obtain her winnings:
“We are aware of this unfortunate error and have taken the necessary steps to assist Ms. Obie in rectifying this issue. Due to MLGCA rules and Maryland State Law, we cannot provide an additional payout for this jackpot, however, if she presents the proper identification credentials to the Maryland Gaming Commission, they will provide her with the appropriate payout. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused Ms. Obie.”
